Assam, a major state in the North Eastern Region of India, is situated between 90-96° E longitude and 24-28° N latitude.It is bounded in the north and east by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh respectievely. In the south it is bordered by Nagaland and Manipur, and to the extreme south lies Mizoram.In the south west, it is bordered by Tripura and Meghalaya . West Bengal is at the western edge.
Assam is a land of fertile valleys, dense forest and mighty rivers Brahmaputra and Barak. It is divided into 3 distinct region with the Brahmaputra valley in the north, the Karbi Anglong and Cachar region in the middle and Barak valley in the south.The capital of Assam is Guwahati ( Dispur ),which is the gateway to the SevenSisters as the seven states comprising the North Eastern region are popularly called.

Assam is a state in natural resources like oil and natural gas, coal, rubber, tea and other valuable minerals.It is the largest economy in the North-East. Although it is more industrially developed than the other North Eastern states, it is an agrarian economy with 74% of its population engaged in agriculture and its allied varieties. The State is known for its large industries in the tea and petroleum sector. Over the years , there has been a shift in the undertaking flood control, seed procurement, training and development of farmers etc.., to increase productivity.

Assam accounts for 50% of Domestic Onshore Oil production in the country. Oil Exploration in Assam has the highest success ratio ( 70%) in the world .It has over 1.3 billion tonnes of proven crude oil and 156 bn.cu.mt. of natural gas reserves.Assam accounts for four of twelve existing refinieries in India, with a refinimg capacity of 7 million tonnes including that of the refinery-cum-petrochemicals complex at Bongaigoan. Assam accounts for one of the biggest pool of professional and skilled manpower engaged in the oil and petroleum industry. The state is also endowed with oil shale reserve capable of sustaining crude oil production of 140 million tonnes anually for 100 years.It also has a reserve of 295 million MT of low ash, high sulphur coal but with ideal C/H ratio for coal liquefaction. With the state's inherent strength built over a century with the future potential, Assam offers opportunities for exploration in the oil and gas sector.
