Government of Assam's objective is to PROMOTE BAMBOO AS A WOOD SUBSTITUTE - THE TIMBER FOR 21ST CENTURY . North east annually harvest bamboo worth of Rs. 5000 crores. The Indian wood consumption during a year is above 100 million cu. Mtrs. This consumption is rising at a rate of over 10% per annum. The ban imposed by Supreme Court of India on cutting / felling of trees in the country has led to import of most of the wood.
The people of North Eastern India have a traditional bond with bamboo. It is extensively used as a material for building, scaffolding, furniture, household items, paper and also as an edible material (Bamboo shoots).
The north eastern region has roughly 64% of the growing stock of bamboo in India which is roughly 20% of the growing stock worldwide.
With a
State Bamboo Policy under formulation the Government of Assam is proposing:

" New plantation in degraded forest land and Jhum cultivated forest land.
" Designing a package for revival of sick plywood
" Policy intervention for tackling the issue of Bamboo Flowering
Investment
